Trasnportation Supervisor Exam

An open-competitive examination for the position of Transportation Supervisor is to be held by the New York State Civil Service Department. In order to fill a present vacancy in school districts, you must pass the test and be placed on the resulting eligible list. The use of a calculator is allowed. The written test will evaluate your abilities in the following subjects:

  1. Bus Driving Practices, Techniques and Traffic Laws
    This section will test your ability to operate passenger buses. Furthermore, the knowledge of New York State Motor Vehicle and Traffic Law rules and regulations governing highway safety, passenger bus operation, and rules of the road will be measured.
  2. Bus Driver Recordkeeping and Scheduling
    In this section, you will be required to make correct record entries in a general record book or use the card-type format after understanding the purpose of the record in question. Usually, you will have to complete a given record before the questions can be answered. You might need to use your knowledge of simple arithmetic functions.
  3. Preparing Written Material
    These multiple-choice questions test your information presentation abilities. For example, you will have to choose the best restatement sentence of a given information stated in 2-3 sentences or choose the best order for the sentences of a given paragraph with its sentences out of order.
  4. School Bus Driving Practices, Techniques and Traffic Laws
    The questions will test your knowledge of how to properly and safely operate a school bus. New York State Motor Vehicle and Traffic Law knowledge of rules and regulations governing highway safety, passenger bus operation, and rules of the road will be measured.
  5. Supervision
    The ability to lead the work unit towards predetermined goals will be measured, including assignment and revision of work, performance evaluation and standards' maintenance, aspiring to increase efficiency, motivation maintenance, subordinates development and procedural change implementation, and dealing with issues such as absenteeism, morale and discipline.
  6. School Transportation Management
    The questions test for knowledge of school transportation system management ability, including regulations of the NYS Departments of Education, Motor Vehicles and Transportation, and the capability to cover the operations, personnel and equipment involved.
  7. Maintenance and Repair of Motor Vehicles
    Questions test your comprehension of mechanical and electrical components, the characteristics of motor vehicles, and how to maintain or repair them; knowledge of automotive/motor vehicle equipment, tools, and test equipment's various procedures, including applying safety during motor vehicle repair work.

Job Description and Duties

The work of a transportation supervisor includes management and responsible charge of a large school district transportation system, responsibility for the details and transportation facilities of planning and scheduling routes. In addition, you will exercise immediate supervision over the work of bus drivers, mechanics and automotive maintenance personnel supervision, and also supervise over the maintenance and repair of buses and other equipment. The safety factor is of utmost importance because children are involved. The salary range is: $30,000 - $56,100 and more, per year.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Prior to completion of the probationary period established for the position, you must secure your eligibility for a Class B or higher level commercial driver's license with a “P” (passenger) endorsement and without airbrake restriction, for the operation of school buses; a New York State Department of Motor Vehicle inspector’s license, and a valid CDL license at time of appointment.
  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • High School graduation.
  • Vehicle operation, maintenance, repair and dispatching experience according to the specifics stated in the examination announcement.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Preference in appointment may be given to successful candidates who are residents of the jurisdiction in which the vacancy exists at the time of certification for appointment.
  • Upon exam application, you will be asked to submit a $10.00-$15.00 filing fee.
