Each police department may choose which exam they require you to take. Below is a list of departments that require different exams.
To join the Harrisonburg police department you must take the Police Officer Entry Level Series Exam developed by IPMA-HR. The exam was designed to assess whether or not you have basic abilities necessary to learn and perform to be a successful police officer. At the beginning of the exam you will be given 25 minutes to study a booklet. Afterwards, the study booklet will be collected and you will have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the test, which contains 100 multiple-choice questions.
To become a Norfolk, VA police officer. You must pass a written examination designed to measure your abilities in reading comprehension, following instructions, spelling and grammar. The test consists of 100 multiple choice questions (80 reading comprehension, 10 spelling and 10 grammar). You will have 3 hours to complete the exam. You must get a score of 70% or more to pass this test.
To become a VA Beach police officer, you must take the Entry-Level Law Enforcement Written Exam developed by CWH Research. The exam was designed to test you skills and abilities required to be a successful police officer. The test consists of multiple-choice questions divided into three sections: Factual Questions, Situational Questions and Questions about You.
The written exam used to become a Richmond police officer is made up of four separately timed test sections: Math, Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Report Writing. The math, reading comprehension and grammar sections are multiple-choice and true/ false questions. The report writing section will require that you write your answers in complete sentences, using proper grammar, capitalization and punctuation.
