American Electric Power (AEP) Test Practice

Are you applying for a position at Americal Electric Power (AEP) and about to take a pre-employment AEP test? As part of their hiring process, AEP often uses several tests administered by EEI (Edison Electric Institute) to screen and select the most qualified candidates for technical positions.

On this page, you will find information and practice resources for your upcoming AEP test, all in one place. Click the links below for more detailed explanations, sample questions, and targeted practice tests for the AEP exam relevant to you.

Choose Your AEP Test:

CAST Test- Prepare for all Cast subtests: graphic arithmetic, mathematical usage, mechanical concepts, and reading comprehension.

If you're applying for mechanical positions you'll likely receive this test.

MASS Test- Sharpen mathematical, mechanical, spatial, and language skills required to succeed on all test subtests.

This test is given for Power Plant Maintenance positions.

SOPD Test- Prepare for challenging analytical thinking questions, and get mathematical and reading comprehension practice questions covering other test sections.

This exam is given for system operator/power dispatch positions.

POSS Test- Sharpen your ability to quickly identify and solve pattern questions, mathematical, mechanical, and reading comprehension questions.

This AEP Test is given for Plant Operator positions.

If your assessment is not on this list or if you have any questions about your upcoming test, please send us an email and we'll get back to you within 24 hours.

Employment AEP Tests

When applying for technical positions at AEP, you might be asked to take an AEP test that predicts whether you have the necessary qualities for the role you are applying for. The AEP pre-employment exam is one of the tests provided by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), and may involve one of these assessments: Cast, Mass, SOPD and POSS.

AEP CAST Test

The Cast test is given for several mechanical positions at EEA, such as the Line Mechanic position (lineman apprenticeship) and maintenance mechanic. There are four sections of the Cast test: graphic arithmetic, reading comprehension, mathematical usage, and mechanical concepts.
  • Graphic Arithmetic- 16 questions with a time limit of 30 minutes, measuring the ability to solve problems using information from prints.
  • Mechanical Concepts- 44 multiple choice questions about possible mechanical situations, with a time limit of 20 minutes.
  • Reading Comprehension- 32 questions with a time limit of 30 minutes- four text passages in total with several questions about each passage.

AEP MASS Test

The AEP MASS Test is used to select candidates for positions in the plant maintenance field, such as mechanics, electricians, steel workers, etc. It contains four subtests: mechanical concepts, assembling objects, reading comprehension, and mathematical usage.
  • Assembling objects- 20 questions with a time limit of 15 minutes, measuring your ability to visualize the correctly assembled form of an object.
  • Mechanical Concepts- 44 multiple choice questions about possible mechanical situations, with a time limit of 20 minutes.
  • Reading Comprehension- 36 questions with a time limit of 30 minutes.
  • Mathematical Usage- 18 questions with a time limit of 7 minutes, measuring the ability to solve basic mathematical problems.

AEP POSS Test

The Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) test is a challenging exam used to select the most qualified candidates for plant operating positions. This exam measures mathematical, verbal, and logical thinking skills and consists of four subtests: figural reasoning, mathematical usage, reading comprehension, and mechanical concepts.
  • Figural Reasoning- 20 questions with a time limit of 10 minutes, measuring the ability to identify patterns in order to solve problems.
  • Mechanical Comprehension- 44 multiple choice questions about possible mechanical situations, with a time limit of 20 minutes.
  • Reading Comprehension- 36 questions with a time limit of 30 minutes.
  • Mathematical Usage- 18 questions with a time limit of 7 minutes, measuring the ability to solve basic mathematical problems.

AEP SO/PD II Test

The SOPD II test is a challenging exam used to select the most qualified candidates for system operator/ Power Dispatching positions. This assessment measures mathematical, verbal, and logical thinking skills and consists of four subtests: figural reasoning, mathematical usage, reading comprehension, and mechanical concepts.
  • Figural reasoning/Analytical Thinking skills- 14 questions with a time limit of 27 minutes, measuring the ability to analyze information and logically derive conclusions.
  • Mathematical Usage- 16 questions with a time limit of 17 minutes, measuring your ability to solve mathematical problems from information provided in the text.
  • Reading Comprehension- 21 questions with a time limit of 19 minutes, an overall of four passages.

AEP Hiring Process

  1. Application – the AEP application process begins with finding a job opening that is relevant to you and submitting an online application
