NYS Firefighter Exam - Ability to Learn and Apply Information:

This section of the test aims to see how quickly you can pick up and apply information that you learn without any prior knowledge.

“Ability to Learn” will start with time allotted to read through a training manual followed by questions on the lesson's content.

Here are a few points to take into consideration:

  1. It is important to note that you can take notes during the lesson to answer questions.
  2. Ensure to pay attention to the entire length of the lesson and read the manual as thoroughly as possible because some of the questions will necessitate information from different parts of the lesson, including graphs and tables.
  3. The information may relate to a fictitious piece of equipment to ensure that you cannot draw from past knowledge.
  4. Each question will have four possible answers.

NYS Firefighter Exam - Basic Arithmetic

In this next section, you will be tested on your basic arithmetic skills, which include addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.

Here are a few important points regarding the basic arithmetic section:

  1. Aside from a handheld battery-operated calculator, no other electronic devices are allowed during testing, including smartphones.
  2. You will be presented with a table with missing values and be tasked to calculate them.
  3. It is helpful to first look at the final tally to discover the missing value.

NYS Firefighter Exam - Reading Comprehension

This segment of the test will examine your ability to quickly read, understand, and interpret various reading passages.

For instance, the passage might concern the newest virus protection from Norton, and the question might relate to the firewalls, including; how updates benefit the user, the number of devices that can be secured at any given time, and more.

A few important points regarding the reading comprehension section:

  1. Each question will be followed by four statements – choose which are false and choose the right one.
  2. The answers can always be found directly in the text.
  3. The questions are at a basic speaking level.

NYS Firefighter Exam - Situational Judgment

This last segment of the exam focuses on how you deal with day-to-day situations and human interactions.
